Biomedical Field Trip

Science students embark on a visit to learn about current research in the war against malaria. They met with research scientists and field experts before engaging in hands-on activities with mosquitoes.

Molecular anthropologists are often asked if DNA markers can tell what “race” you are. The short answer is “no.” Mitochondrial DNA and Y haplogroups can tell from which continent your matrilineal and patrilineal ancestors came. And if you live in the Americas, autosomal mapping can tell what fraction of your ancestors came from Africa as slaves, what fraction came from Europe as colonists, and what fraction were Native Americans. But no DNA can tell your “race.” For the text version of this topic, visit backintyme.com . Is forensic psychiatry a field in forensics or a career in forensics?

Question by BrainCrapper: Is forensic psychiatry a field in forensics or a career in forensics?
I have to do a project on Forensic Psychiatry, but I’m a bit confused.
Wouldn’t Forensic Psychiatrist be a career?
or is that just naming a title to the field?

Both, it would be a title of a psych sub specialty & for those who go into it, it is a career.

I want to major in Forensic Anthropology, anyone know of any colleges who’s courses will support this field?

Question by furever: I want to major in Forensic Anthropology, anyone know of any colleges who’s courses will support this field?
I live in Chicago, IL. I’m about to get my G.E.D and I want to major in Forensic Anthropology, however, I’m not sure which school has courses that will support this field. I do know that before I start my major courses I have to take core (general) courses like basic Science, Social Studies, Math etc. I just want to be prepared before I do anything so that when the time comes I won’t be running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to figure out what to do. I would rather that the colleges be in Chicago because I really don’t have a form of transportation other than public. Thanks a whole lot!

What are the typical requirements one has to take to attend graduate school in some field of Forensic Science?

Question by Woan: What are the typical requirements one has to take to attend graduate school in some field of Forensic Science?
I’m getting my degree in molecular biology, so a focus on DNA work. Will most graduate schools call it good if one gets their undergraduate degree in the physical or life sciences? Such as physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, microbiology…etc. Or are there certain class requirements that must be taken in order to get accepted into their school? (I don’t think it’s like med school where you MUST take certain classes in order to get accepted.)

You are doing great. Molecular biology is the it needed for DNA work. Most forensic graduate programs are happy with any biology or chemistry. Some of this programs are getting to be very selective because of high demand so a highly regarded undergraduate is to your advantage. Some labs will probably hire you even without the forensic degree and train you into it since the science base is what they need.

Find out which school you are most interested in and check out their program. They will be more specific about what they want. Here is a source of colleges for forensic degrees.

How much math is used in the career field of Forensic Anthropology?

Question by ѕєєℓєу вσσтн’ѕ ωιfєу :D : How much math is used in the career field of Forensic Anthropology?
Hello,
I’m 15 and doing research on the careers I might be interested in when I get older. I’m researching the career Forensic Anthropologist at the moment and I’m wondering how much math is used in Forensic anthropology?

thanks.

You have to have a strong understanding of statistics, and also basic math. You don’t generally need a ton of calculus or anything, although it is definitely helpful and is used by some forensic anthropologists, depending on the field of research.

To be a forensic anthropologist, you need a PhD. All programs are going to require that you take a statistics course. If you want to do casework, you may be called to testify in court. In that case, you must fully understand the statistical basis of the calculations you have made.

So you can get by with basic math and statistics, but in order to fully understand all of the research in the field, higher level math is necessary.

Q&A: What types of field are in forensic science?

Question by lifesnotfair: What types of field are in forensic science?
Ever since I took a Forensic Science class in high school, I realized that it was a topic that I was very interested in. I’m not into the “studying the dead bodies or going to the crime scenes” but am more interested in the parts where they analyze the hair samples, check for fingerprints, etc. What type of degree would I need to be able to do something like that? Which schools would be good for that? John Jay in NY? I am about to graduate college by the way, so I suppose which schools have a graduate program?

Computer Science, Chemistry

UC Irvine in california has a graduate program.

Forensic Science Field Techniques – Identifying Burials

Researchers at North Carolina State University have launched the North Carolina Program for Forensic Science to provide technical information and services to law enforcement and medical examiners throughout the state on issues relating to death investigations. Dr. David Hinks took a break from a recent educational program called Discovery and Recovery to explain the range of information and training the program offers. The program is the result of a multidisciplinary effort that includes professors and researchers from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Textiles and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. These researchers look at every aspect of a crime scene from analysis of the skeletal remains, to the bugs found on the body and fibers on the victim’s clothing. All are crucial parts to any investigation. Experts at NC State have participated in over 33 cases in North Carolina some high profile. For instance, in a multidisciplinary effort involving several specialties at NC State, researchers assisted in narrowing down the location of the remains of Cynthia Moreland, a Progress Energy employee who disappeared from a downtown Raleigh parking garage on Aug. 22, 2006 In another interesting case far beyond the city limits of Raleigh NC State’s forensic anthropology team was instrumental in identifying victims from the past military dictatorship in the Republic of Panama. One individual identified was a Chilean national who was detained in 1974. NC
