How would a forensic scientist write a good personal statement to get into graduate school?

Question by Avalon: How would a forensic scientist write a good personal statement to get into graduate school?
I mean someone who wants to be a forensic scientist. I ask this because recently Yahoo! had an article about careers best for introverts- people who like to work alone, basically, so are there any good examples of Personal Statement essays, that an introvert would submit to medical school/graduate school for forensic science or to become a doctor. I need to see example essays an introvert would write, versus an essay that an extrovert would make which is easier to write.

If you need “Homework Help” I suggest you re-post there – otherwise, I’d suggest that university students are supposed to be doing their own homework.

Otherwise – In my country they have this wonderful reference resource called Google, and it works great for making elementary Internet searches so as to keep from making inane or generalized queries. You should try it.

What are the typical requirements one has to take to attend graduate school in some field of Forensic Science?

Question by Woan: What are the typical requirements one has to take to attend graduate school in some field of Forensic Science?
I’m getting my degree in molecular biology, so a focus on DNA work. Will most graduate schools call it good if one gets their undergraduate degree in the physical or life sciences? Such as physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, molecular biology, microbiology…etc. Or are there certain class requirements that must be taken in order to get accepted into their school? (I don’t think it’s like med school where you MUST take certain classes in order to get accepted.)

You are doing great. Molecular biology is the it needed for DNA work. Most forensic graduate programs are happy with any biology or chemistry. Some of this programs are getting to be very selective because of high demand so a highly regarded undergraduate is to your advantage. Some labs will probably hire you even without the forensic degree and train you into it since the science base is what they need.

Find out which school you are most interested in and check out their program. They will be more specific about what they want. Here is a source of colleges for forensic degrees.

I am applying for graduate school for fall 2009 , should i only apply to the forensic science schools that are accredited by FEPAC (there are only 6) or should i pick a few more?

Answer by Schroedinger’s cat
If you want to work in the crime lab as a scientist, you should stick with a FEPAC-accredited program. The American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors (ASCLD) sets out degree and coursework requirements for scientists in the crime lab, and the programs that have the FEPAC stamp of approval meet those requirements (by definition). Also, FEPAC-accredited schools have better resources (your research will be relevant to the field and your professors will have connections in the FS community). Good luck to you!
