Question by : what classes should you take to go to college for forensic science?

Nothing special it’s just a major in college. Take extra science classes for electives (those are more important than law enforcement since you want to be a scientist). Obviously try to get good grades but the grades you need depend on the school more than the major.

Q&A: Should I look into a career in forensic anthropology?
Question by giraffelover120: Should I look into a career in forensic anthropology?
I’ve always been interested in crimes and forensic science. I’m a very creative person and I love puzzles and science. I’ve also thought of looking into a career in law enforcement or maybe as a lawyer. I’m starting highschool and I want to prepare my college plans early.
Could anyone tell me more about forensic anthropology?

I think the best thing for you to do is for you to find some time to either get a job or volunteer in your forensics department. See if you like the job environment. A lot of jobs use the same kind of skills. The one thing that makes each job different is the job environment. Only then can you answer whether it’s the right job for you.

Hello! I have done some work in forensic anthropology, so I’m happy to answer your question.
Most forensic anthropologists have a PhD in anthropology, usually in a biological anthropology subfield. This degree can take 5-10 years after you get an undergrad degree. While you can become a forensic anthropologist with a general anthropology PhD, there are a number of universities that offer forensic-specific certifications. A list of those universities can be found here: http://www.theabfa.org/forstudents.html.
That list is from the website for the American Board of Forensic Anthropology (http://www.theabfa.org/). This organization certifies forensic anthropologists in the United States, and getting board certified is the ultimate goal for most professionals.
One of the universities listed on that page is the University of Tennessee, which is the home of the famous “Body Farm.” They have a good page of information about becoming a forensic anthropologist on their site: http://web.utk.edu/~fac/become.shtml. At the bottom of this page is a section called “Good Advice” that has some good links to more information related to your questions. One of those links doesn’t work, though, so I’ve found it for you:
“So you want to be a forensic anthropologist?” http://www.cas.umt.edu/anthro/areas/forensic_anthropologist.html
Most forensic anthropologists work as professors at universities, so the salaries are similar to what other professors make. The Chronicle of Higher Education has data about professor salaries (http://chronicle.com/article/Chart-Average-Faculty/64500/) and they range from the $ 40,000s to more than $ 100,000, depending on rank and academic field. The salary range for forensic anthropologists varies greatly, depending on the nature of the particular job (academia, federal government, state or local government, research, and so on).
If you browse through some of the sites I’ve given you, you’ll find a wealth of information about becoming a forensic anthropologist. Good luck!

If you want a career in forensic science/criminalistics, you should focus on science classes. Criminalist positions generally require a major in forensic science or a natural science. I would recommend a basic foundation with a year in biology, chemistry and physics. Some high schools also offer classes in forensic science as well. Also, keep in mind what field you want to go into. If you want to be an expert in DNA analysis, you should take biology classes. If you want to be an expert in firearms, then you should focus on physics classes. For drug analysis or trace evidence (arson, gunshot residue, etc.) chemistry would be the way to go. If you want to do digital enhancement or forensic computer analysis (recovering deleted files, etc.) then you should take a lot of computer courses. This site has a lot of information for people who want to become a criminalist. http://www.aafs.org/choosing-career. The AAFS is the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and it is one of the largest professional organizations of forensic scientists in the U.S.
