Q&A: Requirements to study forensic anthropology?
Question by Clandestine: Requirements to study forensic anthropology?
All I have is a high school diploma. What do I have to have or achieve to simply BEGIN studying forensic anthropology? Can I begin studying it without a basic 4-year education from a university? Also, I was homeschooled through high school, would this have any effect?
Any help would be appreciated.

You would need an undergraduate degree and probably a graduate degree. The University of Montana has a pretty good program so applying there would be a good start. Also check out collegeboard.com for more information.

Many schools offer degrees programs for BA in Anthropology and a Master’s and PhD in Forensics. Try University of Montana, CalState Los Angeles, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. These are among a few. It’s going to be really tough and a lot of science, but if you love it, nothing will stop you.
Good luck.

Pig Head/Squirrel Attack! Time Lapse Forensic Decomposition Study 720p HD

120-day time lapse of a pig head decomposing, with help from a surprising variety of animals. 1080p HD Stock footage available at JCMDI.COM V06905a This footage was shot as part of a taphonomic study of the impact of environmental conditions on blunt-force bone trauma. The head specimen shown was purchased from a commercial meat plant and then subjected to 120 days of environmental exposure while being photographed every 3 minutes over a 120 day period. Those 51000+ images were then “thinned-out” so that only the 3100+ images showing significant change remained for this version of the video. While larger predators were prevented from entering the study area so as to avoid them carrying-off the specimen, smaller animals had free access. One of the biggest surprises was how voraciously the Ground Squirrels stripped the remaining tough skin, long after the insects had finished with the soft tissue. Also captured in this sequence are lizards, toads, mice/rats, and a variety of birds. Not suprisingly, nothing is wasted in nature . Studies like these help law enforcement forensic experts learn more about natural processes and environmental effects on tissue and bone, ultimately aiding in identifying human remains, cause/time of death, and may even help solve old cold cases.

There isn’t actually a course specifically devoted to forensic anthropology. You can do Forensic science and major in anthropology. or Forensic anything really and major in anthropology. You can also do any degree pretty much in the arts and humanities faculty and major in anthropology or any degree in the science faculty and major in forensics.
You can do Forensic biotechnology at Wagga Wagga for a uai of 70
Forensic Studies at University of Canberra for 65
They have a 3 forensic degree’s at UTS between 74 and 84
A B. Forensic Science at Western Sydney is 84
But as I said you can pretty much do a Bachelor of Science at uni you want and major in forensics and minor in anthropology. At Sydney University i know they have a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences which would allow you to do a double major, one in forensics and one in anthropology. The uai for that is only mid 70′s.
Good luck. Go to the universities you want to go to and talk to the people there. They’re really helpful and will give you all the information that you need

Cal State LA for sure, University of Montana and University of Tennesse, Knoxville, but UTK is REALLY difficult to get into because that’s where the body farm is, so everyone wants to go there.
I hope I helped, sorry I couldn’t think of five, but very few Universities have specialized programs in Forensic Anthropology.
